Student Guidelines for Introduction to Technology Management

Welcome to Technology Management!

Whether you are a new or experienced online learner, I wanted to provide you with some tips that will make your learning experience more rewarding and stress free.  I hope that you will take the time to carefully review the information provided here.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How do we participate in the required discussion activity?

Click on the link to the left of your screen after logging into eLearning that reads DISCUSSIONS.

Respond to the instructor’s post and then respond to AT LEAST  two other students. Responses MUST be in complete sentences and at least 6-9 complete sentences that expound on ideas and provide new perspectives from the discussion topic.  Discussion boards are set up to engage students in the collegial environment by offering thought and written text to some article or questions provided by the instructor. Doing this is similar to participating in discussion boards/blogs on the Internet where you leave messages for other people or ask questions yourselves. For instance, LinkedIn.com has discussion boards many instructional technology designers participate in to ask and answer questions on instructional design. However, you may not be as casual in the class board as many people are on public boards. You must type with correct grammar and not attack someone else’s opinion, no matter how much you disagree. Here is a good chance to learn how to temper your words when you disagree with someone. After all, that is what an educated person is expected to be able to do.

  • How do we submit assignments?

Refer to the course assignment and schedule page to see the method required to submit your assignments.  Most of your assignments will be posted to the class wiki, in which each student will create a wiki page during the first class meeting.  Other assignments will be loaded to WIMBA for online presentations.  Please completee the WIMBA tutorial to become familiar with the features and functionality of the tool.  Also, complete the computer diagnostic testing in advance to ensure that your computer is WIMBA accessible.

  • How can I contact my instructor if we are not meeting face to face?

The eLearning online platform provides a class email and chat feature for you to use to communicate with your instructor and your peers.  Your instructor may decide to hold chat sessions with the entire class on a periodic basis; this will be communicated at the beginning of class and stated on the syllabus.  If you ever have questions, send your instructor a class email and he/she will respond during the virtual office hours listed in the instructor bio on the course homepage.

  • Is there a policy on late assignments?

Because life happens, it is a good idea to set a schedule early in the semester. If something comes up, then you still have until the assignment due date to organize and complete your work.  The short answer to this question is yes, late work is acceptable with a 10% penalty. Computer problems/Internet problems are not an excuse for not completing and submitting course work when due.  You must have a back-up plan for access to a computer and Internet. Situations like these are unavoidable…but planning ahead can reduce the chances of this happening.  Please communicate with your instructor on your circumstance.

  • What are the communication expectations of students online?

It is expected that all students demonstrate professionalism while communicating with instructors and peers in the same manner as in a traditional classroom setting.  Unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated and will be subject to reprimand at the instructor’s request.  If you are unfamiliar with proper netiquette, please visit the following site and complete the quiz provided in the link: http://www.albion.com/netiquette/netiquiz.html
